What is The Good Story Competition?

The Good Story Competition is a competition open to amateur and professional filmmakers to produce a short video that features everyday people in Asia doing good to improve the lives of others.

It’s organised by Our Better World, the online storytelling initiative of the
Singapore International Foundation.

When does it start?

It’s open for entries on 17 January 2014.

When is the deadline for submissions?

21 March 2014, 2359HRS (SINGAPORE TIME)

What are the categories and prizes?

There is an Open Category and a Professional Category with corresponding prizes.

Who can join the competition?

Anyone who loves to engage, enthrall and entertain via video storytelling can join the competition! There are two categories: Open for students and hobbyists, and Professional, for those who already make a living out of their filmmaking passion.

Do I need to be based in Asia?

No, you do not need to be based in Asia, but your story should be about a person or a group of people in a non-profit or social enterprise doing good in Asia.

Is there an age requirement?

You must be at least 18 years old on the date of your submission, or must have attained the contractual age in your respective country on the date of your submission.

Can I submit more than one video?

No. Only one submission per filmmaker.

What is the process for submitting an entry?

  • You receive an email notification from Our Better World confirming your participation in The Good Story Competition. If you do not receive it, send an email to
  • You then proceed to source, plan, shoot and produce your video
  • Submit your video on or before 21 March 2014. Entry can be submitted through these forms:
What is the maximum length for an entry?

Four minutes max.

Is there a minimum length?

It can be as short as one minute.

Does my video need to be in interview documentary style?

No, you are free to choose the style best suited to tell your story.

Can I submit a video I’ve already produced?

Yes, as long as it is an existing video filmed, produced and shown no earlier than 1 January 2013, with the call to action still relevant for the non-profit / social enterprise featured in the video, provided that watermark, sign off and non-exclusive distribution rights to the film are given to Our Better World. It must also meet the submission requirements of the competition.

What format should I use?

The following formats are ok:
mov, mpeg, mp4, avi or flv

Other technical information:

  • – Codecs: H.264, H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, wmv1, wmv2
  • – Aspect ratio: 16.9
  • – Entry should be in 720p HD or higher
  • – File size of entry should not exceed 500MB
Is there an entry fee for The Good Story Competition?

No, entry is free.

Can I submit an entry that’s not in English?

As long as you have English subtitles, sure.

Do I need to fact-check all information in my video?

Yes. You must verify that all information in your video is truthful and accurate.

What if I miss the 21 March deadline?

Then we cannot accept your video entry. All submissions must get to us by 2359HRS (SINGAPORE TIME) on 21 March 2014.

Do I have to obtain copyright for the music I use for my entry?

Yes, you are responsible to get permission for music and all other aspects of your video that are copyrighted. Given that we’re looking at distributing the winning entries, it’s best to clear rights in “all media”. Best way to circumvent this is to use copyright-free or royalty-free music.
